The X-SYNC™ narrow-wide chain ring delivers complete control. Tall, square teeth, rounded chamfers and a thick-thin tooth geometry combine to engage the chain earlier—and never let it go. With multiple ring options available, you can match your gear range to your terrain, wheel size and riding style. And recesses at the base of the teeth get rid of mud so the chain remains in place no matter what conditions you’re up against.

SRAM X-SYNC™: A Developing Story

More than a decade ago, SRAM’s German engineers decided to go head-to-head with a fundamental frustration of biking—how to keep the chain on the ring.

They began by looking at dual-drive solutions concocted for urban riders whose chains would disengage as they pedaled along bumpy European roads. These dual-drive models offered a simplified, focused approach that could make sense away from the city streets, too. The engineers were inspired. Ideas started to fly. Designs followed. Field tests. Frustrations. They learned lessons—for instance, that side-to-side movement (not up-and-down) was the most frequent cause of a disconnected chain. The engineers now had a single goal in mind: to create the perfect MTB chain ring—a ring that wouldn’t drop the chain in any conditions or under any circumstances. This led to the unprecedented thick-thin tooth shape. To optimized square tooth geometry. To mud recesses that kept the chain clean and moving. All focused on the dynamic bike platform. As SRAM lead engineer Frank Schmidt puts it, “We further developed it until we reached perfect chain control.”

The original narrow-wide chain ring is now the perfect MTB chain ring for riders who never compromise. X-SYNC™—ONLY BY SRAM.

Every detail of the 11-speed X1 X-HORIZON™ rear derailleur is engineered for smooth, reliable shifting action—from the larger upper pulley offset to the 12-tooth X-SYNC™ pulley wheels. The XG-1180 MINI CLUSTER™ hybrid cassette is light, durable and equipped with a 10-42 gear range that’s a perfect fit for any ride. MINI CLUSTER™ construction combines three small cogs that are CNC-machined out of a single block of billet steel with an additional eight cogs that are individually pinned together.
