A spectacle in Lenzerheide
A fairytale ending fit for a king. Following a Swiss World Championships the week before in Crans-Montana, it was time for Nino Schurter to return to Bike Kingdom for the Lenzerheide World Cup – his final World Cup race, and in front of his home crowd. Crossing the same finish line where he took his most iconic World Championship title and 34th World Cup win in the years before, Nino raised his arms to the adoring Swiss crowd for a final time.
With a roaring home crowd, it was set to be one hell of a send-off, with cow bells and chants of “NI-NO” ricocheting around the valley. The atmosphere was electric, with thousands of fans gathering to cheer on their hero for the final time.
Managing his emotions as he lined up to the start, Nino rode a strong and steady race, staying solidly in the middle of the pack, never straying far from the top 20. As the final lap approached, Frischi rang the bell as Nino sat up and soaked up the crowd. The final lap couldn't have been a more fitting end. Nino no longer raced, but instead embraced the crowd - waves, high fives and arms in the air - before crossing that iconic finish line one last time with a huge smile on his face.
