The Road Trip. The act of taking the idea of escaping the day-to-day, to go explore and experience new surroundings. KM1919 was no exception. Calvin Huth, Steve Shannon and I had been eager to get out and explore the vast dreamland known as Farwell Canyon. This unique and sought-after zone that was founded and ridden in the early ’90s by the pioneers of freeride mountain biking. Fortunately for us, SCOTT had just released a new, badass, do anything bike – the perfect tool for the trip.
The stars were aligning, emails were sent, and we had a plan to head out west.
The timing on this trip was a little funny. Calvin and myself were down in Utah for Rampage when we realized there was only a small weather window left up North before winter was set to strike. Needless to say, there was a bit of a “road trip” just to get to point A. The day after finals Calvin’s truck was packed, and we left Utah to embark on the mission back to Canada. After a few liters of coffee and approximately 30+ hours driving, we were in the wild, wild west of The Cariboo Chilcotin. Arriving late at night, camp was set up and the beds were hit in preparation for the next days’ adventures.
Farwell is a special place. If you were to toss Alaskan backcountry skiing, and mountain biking into a blender, you’d get a delicious Farwell freeride smoothie. Like skiing, conditions need to be just right out here. If it’s been too sunny and dry the ground firms up and you’re a dead man when you need to slow down. A little bit of rain, and your tires gunk up and stop rolling. Certain lines are also virtually impossible to scope, due to the technical and steep terrain. Last, but not least, you must earn your turns, no shuttles or chairlifts here- “hike a bike baby!”
Between Coast Gravity Park and single track trails lost in the middle of the forest, we caught up with Brendan Howey at his home to check out his summer program.
Every time I remember Lisbon, there are lots of memories, flavors, smells... stairs and fun trails.

Refusing to let the snow of the Austrian winter keep him off his bike, Fabio heads to Saalbach Hinterglemm to enjoy a great day in the mountains. Unfortunately, the ski police has other ideas. Attempting to outrun – or rather out-ride - the police, Fabio makes use of everything the Austrian ski resort has to offer. No gap too large to hit, no roof too high to drop, this highly entertaining police chase has to be seen to be believed.
Shot amongst the stunning scenery of Austria’s Saalbach Hinterglemm over the length of 24 days, turning his crazy vision into reality was certainly Fabio’s biggest project to date.

A Scottish and a Swiss mountain biker meet on a trail... What seems to be the beginning of a lame joke, is actually the beginning of a magnificent encounter. You can see what actually happens when mountain bike pros Danny MacAskill and Claudio Caluori meet up in Graubünden, Switzerland, in the new video “Home of Trails”. No summit is too high, no trail is too steep, no gorge is too deep for these two, as they hit the endless trails of the region. Naturally all the action and countless breathtaking views are accompanied by the witty commentating of Downhill World Cup POV star Caluori as he shows MacAskill around his home region:
The world of mountain biking would be unimaginable without these two: Danny MacAskill is not only widely known for his stunning street trials videos, but has also thrilled millions of fans on YouTube with his mountain bike skills as well. Claudio Caluori has made a name for himself with his fast-paced, eccentric POV runs during the Mountain Bike World Cup. This new video brings these two characters together and shows them discovering Claudio’s “Home of Trails”.
“Scottish lines” in the Swiss mountains
Caluori shows the Scot a portion of the 17,000 kilometers / 10,500 miles of trails available in the five bike destinations in Graubünden: no matter whether they hit the trails in Arosa Lenzerheide, Davos Klosters, Engadin St. Moritz, Flims or Scuol Samnaun Val Müstair, both enjoy every minute they spend on their bikes to the fullest. The tour starts at the summit of Piz Nair, where Danny waits for his enthusiastic tour guide at 3,000m / 9,842ft a.s.l. Claudio challenges Danny on the diverse trails of each destination, but Danny surprises the Swiss rider with a few cheeky “Scottish lines” on both dirt and brickwork as they make their way through the region.

The long and cold winters in Sweden might be nice for cross-country skiers and ice skaters but it's less than ideal for mountain bikers – especially Slopestyle riders. So how does FMB World Tour ace Max Fredriksson train for the contest season? Max’ new video series ‘Off-Season’ offers a close look at how the young Swedish rider recovered from his season-ending injury in 2017 and how he prepared for the first contest at Crankworx Rotorua.
My injuries in 2017 held me back from competing as much as I wanted and in episode 1 you’ll get a closer look on how I’ve been dealing with all of that and how a normal session at my park looks like.
Since our Swedish winters are very long, and leaving us with no other option than riding indoor skateparks. I’ve been going down to Barcelona to ride La poma bike park to get some dirt riding in before the contest season kicks off. This is how the vibes are in one of the best public bike parks i the world and this is what we’re up to while spending time there…
Even if La poma bike park is an incredible bike park and I’m usually spending around 5 weeks down there, I thought that I’d mix it up this year and head over to France and ride with some friends that also competes in the FMB world tour. We got to ride a bunch of insane spots and had a crazy week filled with good sessions!
After a week in France, we spent our last remaining time on the trip in Barcelona riding La Poma bike park together with a bunch of friends from all over the world. Since Crankworx Rotorua was closing in I decided to fly home a week before, to ride our brand new training facility that opened up while I was out traveling. Dome Adrenaline Zone is probably the best facility I’ve ever ridden. I went up there fot a couple of days to prepare myself before flying across the world to ride my first contest since I broke the collarbone that ended 2017 for me…
It certainly feels like it’s been a long winter this year... The yearning for perfectly shaped trails, stunning mountain views and getting out there to ride with buddies is huge! Mountain bike rookies and families still have to be patient until the doors to Bikepark Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis open on June 8, but the new clip with Jackson Goldstone, “Day out with Dad”, may provide some relief and certainly create some stoke for the new season ahead.
Max Fredriksson is one of the top slopestyle athletes on the FMB World Tour. After finishing second in the FMB Diamond Series in 2016, Max had his mind set on challenging the top spot once again but a pair of unfortunate injuries cut his 2017 season short before it even really began. Having recovered from the broken collarbone sustained at Crankworx Whistler, Max was determined to make up for time not spent on two wheels and headed to Järvsö Bike Park with his childhood friend Andreas just in time for closing weekend. The result is PowerPlace.
The EWS this year was one of the best pro mountain bike race series ever! It had everything: Sam Hill dominating on flat pedals, exciting to watch wet races and a race all the way to the end...apart from Cecile dominating with races to spare at the end...but she's super fast so... Check out the team's end of season recap that summarises everything that happened this year in to one easy to consume 20-something minute episode. Easy!
Cáceres Mountain Bike, 1 destination, 1000 rounds
History, natural environments and a shot for every taste, this is the province of Cáceres, a new destination for the practice of mountain biking. This province is the second most extensive in Spain, after Badajoz, but between this magnitude two key points stand out: the Sierra de Gata and the Sierra de Montánchez. Both areas known and recognized for their BTT centers and for the work they have been doing for a long time.
Get ready to enter a new dimension of colors, smells and sensations. El Hierro is the youngest island and also the smallest of the Canarian archipelago. Anyone who has ever skied or snowboarded Jackson Hole knows just how nerve-racking it can be to send it into the infamous Corbet's Couloir, even in the best of conditions.
Over the last decade the level of riding seen at the world's biggest slopestyle events has gone through the roof. Almost every season it feels like there's a new trick or combination that eclipses what came before it. To stay at the top of such a sport requires an incredible amount of training that puts both bike and body on the line.
It's been 10 years since Brendan became part of the COMMENCAL family and there have been few riders with whom we’ve written such a long story!
